British-born American Actor who is a native of Ghana and star actor in Anchor Baby - SAM SARPONG, is dead after committing suicide in America. The gifted actor, who was also a super-model, musician and an MTV show host; jumped off a bridge in Pasadena, California on October 26 after several hours authorities tried to negotiate with him to retreat from such suicidal act.
How Sam Sarpong died
According to a press release from the Pasadena Police Department, the British-American actor, model, and TV personality jumped off a bridge in Pasadena, Calif., after a seven-hour exchange with the authorities. Sarpong was 40 at the time of his death.
A witness spotted the former Tommy Hilfiger spokesmodel early Monday morning (October 26, 2015) and called the authorities. A team of emergency personnel rushed to the scene, where they reached out to Sarpong via the Department Crisis Negotiation Team.
“While conversing with the individual, members of his family arrived and provided background regarding his emotional state,” the release read. “Tragically, after approximately seven hours of communication, the male jumped from the bridge into the Arroyo.”
Sam is survived by his sister, June Sarpong, and father, Samuel Sarpong Sr. In addition to being the face of Tommy Hilfiger, Sam was a co-host on MTV’s Yo Momma and an actor with 76 credits to his name.
The Sarpong family has released a statement regarding his death. See below:
"It is with great sadness that the family of Samuel Sarpong Jr. must share the news that Sam has passed away," his family said in a statement via his rep. "The circumstances surrounding his death are currently under investigation and no additional details are known at this time. ... The famikly appreciates the thoughts and prayers and other expressions of sympathy, and request that privacy be respected at this extremely difficult time."
Sam Sarpong's death has been ruled a suicide by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner in a press statement, pending an autopsy. The statement also noted that final arrangements are forthcoming.
Sam Sarpong was a fashion editorial magazine campaign for the brand Loius Vuitton. A recipient of the MAA Fashion Award for Male Model of the Year, and twice named by Today's Black Woman magazine on their "Fifty Most Beautiful People" list. Sarpong was added to Us Weekly's, "Hot 100 Young Hollywood with Style" list. Sarpong also walked the runway for designers such as Versace, Donna Karen, Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Jean Phillppe and Ed Hardy. Additionally, he started his own clothing brand, "Chosen One Collection," a line of T-shirts, jeans and hoodies.
According to report from the Pasadena Police Department, a witness called law enforcement on Monday morning of October 26 after seeing a man standing outside of the bridge railing. Officers and firefighters communicated with him for hours, but he ultimately jumped to his death.
"It is sad and troubling when an individual has become so despondent that he or she feels their only option is to end their life," Police Chief Phillip Sanchez said in a statement. "These incidents can often have a significant impact on the victim's loved ones, first responders, and the community as a whole. My prayers go out to the family", the Police Chief concluded.
Sam Sarpong was born in London and moved to Los Angeles with his father, Sam Sarpong Sr. who is a native of Ghana, when he was 11 years old. He attended El Camino Real High School in Woodland Hills, California, where he was a basketball star.
When his father moved to Pasadena, Sarpong lived with a friend's family so he could continue attending El CAmino Real. When his aspirations for a college and professional basketball career proved unsuccessful, he turned to acting and modeling. He was the brother of the British television presenter June Sarpong.
Sam Sarpong died on 26 October 2015 at the age of 40 after jumping off a bridge in Pasadena, California; in a suicidal death. Sam is survived by his sister, June Sarpong, and father, Samuel Sarpong Sr.
